Students for Violence Prevention
Double the power – share this project with others
Students for Violence Prevention (SVP) is a group of peer educators who host programming, presentations, and events on the issues of domestic violence, dating violence, red flags of abusive behaviors, types of abuse, healthy & unhealthy relationships, stalking, sexual assault, rape, healthy sexual relationships, healthy sexuality, sexual communication and consent, self-care, bystander behaviors, and bystander intervention. SVP aims to create a culture on the PSU campus where sexual and domestic violence are unacceptable, victims and survivors are supported, and students are empowered to be active bystanders.
SVP is raising funds to send ten members and one advisor to the regional conference called Meeting of the Minds in Kansas City. Meeting of the Minds is a regional prevention and health education conference for college and university peer educators, their advisors, administrators, and campus and community law enforcement. During the conference, some of the best training and education will be offered to the students and professionals from college and university campuses across the region. Some of the brightest experts in college health and campus safety will present effective strategies, model programs, and best practices to take back to the campus and the community. The conference is an opportunity for members to gain knowledge that can be used to improve their peer education program and better educate students on the PSU campus. The conference is also an opportunity to present the accomplishments of the PSU peer education program to other schools and be eligible for regional awards. Last year, the PSU organization was awarded Outstanding Program and Outstanding Peer Educator for their region. Several students are planning to present at the conference this year. They are interested in presenting at least one workshop, if not two, depending on who is able to attend. The conference begins on Thursday April 5th with a keynote speaker and dinner and ends on Saturday April 7th after the awards lunch. The students will be driving from Pittsburg to Kansas City on Thursday, staying two nights in the conference hotel, and driving back to Pittsburg on Saturday afternoon.
