Senior Design is a capstone project required of all graduating seniors majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology and Electronics Engineering Technology. The class is intended to provide practical applications of the concepts that have been taught to students thus far.

Each team has a project that requires two semesters to complete. The fall semester is the design portion, and the spring semester consists of the manufacturing and assembly of the project.

The Agricultural Implement Senior Design Team has chosen a very unique project, designing a first of its kind, skid steer implement. This project is a clean slate, multipurpose implement that combines the tree cutting ability of a tree shear, with the tree and brush moving capabilities of a grapple bucket. This team is comprised of six students all enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology Departments.

How will your gift make an impact

Your gift will go toward the purchasing of welding supplies, hydraulics components, hardware, sheet metal, and other structural materials to begin building this extraordinary skid steer implement. Below is a breakdown of those materials needed.

Fabrication:

  • 75 pounds of E7018 stick welding rod
  • Grinding wheels
  • Estimated at $250

Material:

  • 3 sheets of 48”x 96”x.5” A514 half inch plate
  • 1 sheet of 12”x48”x1” of A514 plate
  • 25ftx2.5” Schedule 80 pipe
  • Several small brass shims as wear resistance
  • Estimated at $1400

Hydraulic:

  • 30ft of hose
  • 4” bore cylinder
  • 2 - 2” bore cylinders
  • Directional Control Valve
  • Hydraulic fittings
  • Estimated at $750

Hardware:

  • 2 - 12”x1” Grapple hinge pins
  • 4 - 3”x1” Grapple hinge pins
  • 1 - 2”x2” Shear hinge pin
  • 8 - 8 .5” bolts for Tree Fall protection
  • Estimated at $50

Unforeseen Expenses:
Currently unknown costs that inevitably come up, estimated at 20% of total budget.
